FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s basketball team (10-5, 3-3 SSC) held on to defeat the Florida Tech Panthers (7-8, 1-5 SSC), 78-72, Wednesday at the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center.
Brian Cahill (So., Arlington, Va.) had one of the best nights of his career, earning 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting. He brought down a career-high 11 rebounds and tied a team-best five assists.
Stian Berg (So., Baerum, Norway) scored a career-high 14 points, and only needed five shot attempts to get there.
NSU played a close first half, allowing the road team to shoot 50 percent from the field. While Florida Tech stayed hot from the floor, Cahill kept the Sharks in the first half, scoring 11 of his 15 points. Florida Tech nailed a late first-half 3-pointer to put them ahead at the break, 36-33.
The Sharks put the Panthers in a hole in the second half, starting the period off on a 13-3 run. The Sharks could not miss early in the second half and went on to make 14 of their first 20 shots of the period. The Sharks built their largest lead at 16 points with 7:51 remaining.
After a stretch of dead-eye accuracy, the pendulum swung the other way and NSU found itself in a cold spell. The Sharks shot one for their last nine field goal attempts over a span of nearly eight minutes. Florida Tech seemed to have climbed back into the contest, but ran out of time and was forced to send the Sharks to the line. NSU sealed the game at the free throw stripe, shooting 7-for-8 in the second half.
NSU won the game on efficient shooting, finishing at 49 percent from the floor, 43 percent from 3-point range and 92 percent from the foul line. The Panthers were able to create extra possessions, with 10 offensive rebounds, but also turned the ball over 18 times to NSU’s 15. NSU scored 24 points off Panther turnovers, nearly a third of the point total.
Maurice Fuller (So., Westfield, Ind.) and
Lukas Roesch (Sr., Sugar Grove, Ohio) each chipped in 12 points Wednesday. Fuller nailed a game-high four treys, while Roesch totaled five rebounds and a career-high five assists.
Iran Hollis (Sr., Hollywood, Fla.) scored 10 points and brought down six boards.
The Sharks will return to the road on Saturday to face Lynn in Boca Raton, Fla. at 4 p.m. The game will broadcast live on 640 Sports.
